For Sowing and Reaping
by Suzán Jiván
For sowing and reaping
dating back
to fragile glass
as seeds scattered
by trowels
without explaining how
to set off clouds
of flowers under ground
as hard characters
break their backs
for aristocrats
in mine shafts
and porcelain factories
for figurines as last gasps
in ceramics and stoneware
wafting acid into someplace
palatial without hesitation
achieving salvation
by self-preservation
in coats of arms
molded into clay
portrayed as blatantly
sinful behavior
after mimicking saints
as often unstable
and wayward
in stone-housed scapes
scraped in between pavers
as insulators of praise
intoxicated by language
coming into play...

By Evoking Smoke
by Suzán Jiván
Whack! Whoop-de-do!
as contemporaries
of Luther-like Lucifer,
" Who are these people?! "
in a space launch vehicle
serving soft drinks
from Phoenix-to-Albuquerque
while wearing baggy pants
with the word after waste or want
starting as a novel with the knowledge
of a snob planning for the proper
tyrannical father with the very qualities
of a trouser-wearing auntie
getting a green card
meaning the opposite
of a red-neck
on the color spectrum
as a visceral job
of conjuring the gossipy
with fondness for poverty
in matters of the heart
like sensible punk-rock
in a mosh-pit
for listeners
with whipsaw
precision
long since
like multi-
directional
hit-and-runs
with hints
of funk
pummeling
bones
to pick
at the opening
by evoking smoke...

One Flew to Paris
by Suzán Jiván
One flew to Paris
with no comparison
as a must have
given access
to high-standing
happenstance
unshakable
beyond
comparison
like a prissy
heiress
flapping
in fabulous
bathtub gin
being buoyed
by 80 proof
clear fluids
escaping
provinciality
as a headstrong
romantic
dealing with weighty
matters
combating harsh
realities
camouflaged
by the tyrannical
unsurpassed
as a crackerjack...
Footstep by Footstep
by Suzán Jiván
Footstep by footstep
toward intellectual property
starting off as a sort
of fish-out-of-water
into a mournful story
long before
and with little more
than a de-classified plan
for a master class
under orders to make
the president laugh
with a dutiful trickle
of disconnected riddles
and the whimsy of silver
shimmering blissfully
over dinner
under the premise
of missing
targeted killings
miffed
right in the middle...

Construed as Bolts of Blue
by Suzán Jiván
Amorous patterns
of the intergalactic
streaking
by like supreme
beams of regal
white light
climactically
colliding
with tridents
construed
as bolts
of royal blue...

An Allusion
by Suzán Jiván
An allusion
probably due
to a tree in bloom
with white attributes
standing out
as passion
against classic
iconographic
black branches
in the foreground
like apocryphal
palm fronds
in homage
to harmony...
Oil on Canvas
Oil on canvas
pastel on paper
ink and vermillion
marble version
blue-grey paper
heightened
with white
yellow Christ
grimacing
my rhythm...
In a Societal Stroll-By
by Suzán Jiván
In a societal stroll-by
gently jagged
fairly direct
insider's tales
of mass holdings
vigorously unsquare
no questions asked
as swaths of humanity
beginning and advanced
with little more than
a flurry of limbs akimbo
fairly cheeky
relentlessly vintage
internalized differences...

Vigorously Swigged
by Suzán Jiván
Vigorously
swigged
from
the recent
shtick
becoming
caught up
with silly-
sounding
viewers
whirling
through
their third
or fourth
closed door
in related
drawings
and decorative
prints still
cognizant
of possibilities
like stalwart
skeleton keys
for the mythical
signatures
in a mystical mix...

Sometimes Shown Holding
by Suzán Jiván
Sometimes shown holding
the straight and narrow
as more vital than ever
while positing the idea
of a warm bath
with applause
like a substantial story
about to start talking
with a triple-sling jigger
of music in history
agreed or disagreed
in greetings
like divisive shoutings
over original casts
of horrific gasps
with atypical taps
wrongly doubted...

Earthen Yet
by Suzán Jiván
Earthen yet
reduced
to a trickle
between
two
rivers
as a pilgrimage
slow-spreading
like the essence
of an indelible melting
with the expressions
of a tip-top
artistic genre
ensnared
by a glaringly
unanswerable tale...

Recounting a Quarrel
by Suzán Jiván
Recounting a quarrel
with shallow pockets
while jabbering
on the unsubstantial
with long-lasting
wavy hair
on a bandstand
ratcheted
with packaging
shot back asking
haltingly boyishly
in the corner
famous for
fanciful thought
written off
as scandalous
enthusiasm
built from a kit
made of pillows
along rolling hills
uplifted...

Key to the Principal Families
by Suzán Jiván
Key to the principal families
very compact, but not narrow
directed downward, keeling laterally
in asymmetry, not appearing
to be proceeding as beadlike
tiger beetles fast-flying
occurring in bright sunlight
soldier beetles short, exposing
boring into oak, reared in numbers
divided by hind coxae
between the eyes
shining tapering concealing
shores and streams
creeping...

American Black Duck
by Suzán Jiván
I
American black duck
violet speculum
feeding
by tipping
body
tail up
II
Mottled marshlands
continuous swamp
dotted bog
spotted fires
flaring
in ponds of orange
streaming with reams
of sweet cream
congealing
into milky seas
of frothy greens
III
Ceding
bleak winters
into verdancy
vividly streaked
like light-blue
irises
inciting strivings
to take flight
into bright-blue
summer skies
IV
Enticing
vertical lines
like corundum
in Gneiss
as a highly prized
rare variety
compiled inside
plutonic rock
huge solid hardness
V
Blazed with black
as prismatic topaz
striated
with mystically
vitreous pinks
VI
Flashing
as pyramidal
Sanskrit
in all
of the wondrous
colors inevitable love
VII
Intrinsically
fulfilling
the prophesy
of unceasingly
brilliant seasons
repeating eternally...

Hoods Blossom on Decay
by Suzán Jiván
Hoods blossom on decay
but never dead-end
on disappointing stretches
of professional expectations
sanely anticipated
in a satiny frame
of romantic failures
inciting dreary debates
of liberation long before
cramped quarters of long ago
credited with conception
by simply telling
amiable endings
while asleep in bed...

Maximum Push
by Suzán Jiván
I
Maximum push
of public funds
drying up
from the upper-
middle class
as combative
back-and-forths
setting off
death nells
for critical elements
like campaign spending
while making the patient pay
in and out of the workplace
II
As unsustainable
as legal immigration
to illegal destinations
after stepping up national debates
with warnings of future sanctions
and broadening of investigations
for magisterial fundraising in a shake-up of personal endangerments
like conscience raisers
repositioned as clay
during stop-motion animation...

mostly ivory
slightly hairy
erect clusters
sensuous scent
V-shaped base
horizontal plain
black maple
sugar maple
alternating angles
riverbanks
often whorled
warbling voices...

Hence the Specimen
by Suzán Jiván
Hence the specimen
toxic to predators
exuding sap
when bruised
medicinally-
steeped leaves
coarse hairy
hundreds of heads
stout projections
widespread
erect wooly stems
thought to resemble
essential pussytoes
as sensual
grooved petals
eaten as greens
ranging from the deepest
serrated species
with shallow teeth
easily cultivated
dilated milky white
arched spines
prickly wings wiry
suffused by infusions
of bristling blue fruits...
Separate Wavelengths
by Suzán Jiván
Separate wavelengths
bleak and strange
isolation
detachment
fascination
with pointy hats
Showing chic
partnering
sensual heads
simultaneously
eloquent
intensely
expressive
freshly inventive
subtle textures
mesmerizing sex...

Long Sloping Forehead
by Suzán Jiván
Long sloping forehead
black breast brown head
and neck wild celery
white forewing wintering
soft " krr-krr " repeatedly
giving whistling
calls and lifting
black bills
budding aquatic
uplands
floating masses
lasting
diving white light
brightening
belly wing beat
ivory...

Encrusted with Glaze
by Suzán Jiván
Taking cues
planning
for the womb
feeling firey
as if in a kiln
for porcelain
unfinished
in miniature
resembling
nautiluses
like cum
from the poet
as cloak-like
second waves
of fountain sprays
drenching
mollusk shapes
encrusted with glaze...

Sweet Gramma Grass
by Suzán Jiván

You Can Tell When
by Suzán Jiván
You can tell when
trying to make sense
of guesses
brings more intensity
like a game changer
sounding racier
in an intimate space
by navigating
past tragedy
with passion
outwardly admirable
during climax
fixed in memory
like big ideas hidden
behind a scrim
amid wistful
uncertainty in pitch
beginning
as rowdy willingness
in bones below the tibia
loved to bits
like wildly nubby opposites...
Safer Looks Scene
by Suzán Jiván
I
Safer looks scene
together with aesthetics
venturing nowhere else
than spectacled events
II
Like a frontman
coming to pass
wearing gladiator's
sandals spun into glass
III
Off the rack of fantasy
as hankerings for a man
happily ever after
after stepping back
IV
Joining hands with shares
of handsome in a pageant
as extravaganzical jazz
dating back overlapping firsthand...

Fallen More in Long
by Suzán Jiván
I
Fallen more in long-
term court-endorsed
popcorn appointees
in theaters
with sunscreens
for prematurely
aging faces of patrons
exposed demeaningly
to unseen rays of regulation
II
Strikingly segregated
as black caddies
in nuanced
acknowledgements
of menial jobs
lured by the astro-
nomically popular
six figures a year
pushed to the brink
of extinction
hinging entirely
on home
and community
equally and utterly
alive in tell-all bios
during tough times
likened to Eureka moments
as seen worldwide on the back nine...
A Volatile Mix
by Suzán Jiván
A volatile mix
militias politics
strip-searched
decades since
by official figures
like plunging statistics
officially fitting in
as half of an advocate
for an unarmed man
lampooned on Fox News
in an unsuitable orange suit...

Precisely Every Line
by Suzán Jiván
Precisely every line
heavily outlined
by bold titles
like strikingly
lithe writings
tempered
as soft-edged texts
with tender
poetical aspects
meant to be sensually read...

Spoken as Mutual Pleas
by Suzán Jiván
I
Exhilarating work
as a workout
testing the stamina
of a scripted high-camp
cast as a vast assemblage
converging into a yearlong dance
II
Performed under vaulted joists
dripping with sacred means of intrigue
brought into being by munificent poetry
spoken as mutual pleas
III
Beneath cathedral ceilings
webbed into permanent centers
traversed by ribbing and timbres
before entering
into perpetual questions
as six-celled intrepid dimensions...
